Vītolēni sirsnīgi pateicas sponsoriem un atbalstītājiem – Kultūrkapitāla fondam, Vidzemes plānošanas reģionam, Gaujienas pagasta pārveildei, Apes novada domei, A/S „Vidzemes papīrs”, A/S „Laima”, SIA „Lienama”, SIA „Intrad”, Latvijas Galda hokeja federācijai un Baibai Zvaigznītei no Reģionu televīzijas. Tikai pāris dienu pirms nometnes tapa arī „Vītolēnu” himna, ko sacerējis Artūrs Kuzmins kopā ar Baibu Tauriņu (notis pieejamas www.vitoleni.com).

Pēc astoņām kopā pavadītām dienām un vairākiem koncertiem vītolēni ar asarām acīs šķīrās, lai gaidītu atkalsatikšanos pēc pavisam neilga laika rudens koncertā septembrī un tad sāktu skaitīt dienas līdz nākamajai tikšanās reizei Gaujienā, kur nemainīgi visus atkal kopā sauks J. Vītola mūzikas gars un latviešu dziesmas mīlestība.

Vītolēni 2015

The creative summer camp Vītolēni for children and teenagers has evolved step by step, and blessed by God it filled Gaujiena with joyful voices of children and sounds of music for the 13th summer in a row. The camp gathered 120 youngsters from all corners of Latvia to make music and spend some quality time together during the summer holidays.

The week was filled with intense rehearsals and dynamic leisure activities: vītolēni[1] were busy exploring the Gaujiena nature trail, playing various sports games, carrying out some tricky tasks at the Night Trail, and additionally to the general concert programm of the camp, many participated in various ensembles and prepared repertoire as soloists for the Night Concert and Open Stage where everyone was welcome to express themselves in a creative manner. Traditionally every year participants of the camp visit Anniņas, the Jāzeps Vītols Memorial Museum, where guided by Jānis Krišjānis vītolēni have an opportunity to be in the summer house of the composer and learn more about his life and contribution to the Latvian classical music. Just a couple of days before the camp kicked off, Artūrs Kuzmins and Baiba Tauriņa composed the Vītolēni hymn.

Following seven active days, the evening of July 24 arrived with the closing concert of the Vītolēni camp where children performed the repertoire they had prepared during the previous week. Latvian folksongs have always constituted an integral part of the repertoire at the Vītolēni camp: not only do they help the youngest generation grow fond of Latvian traditions and be reminded of our culture but also introduce them to the Latvian art of living and cultivate the national values that we have inherited from our ancestors.

This is the 10th year since composer Andris Riekstiņš created the rockatorio Pantu spēles (The Game of Couplets) forVītolēni choir with orchestra, and for this reason the composition was performed again under the guidance of the composer himself. The composition plays around various scenes of children’s life, depicting some happennings at school, in forest, on the road and at some other places where children often encounter various merry and extraordinary events. There were such compositions performed at the concert as Baltā bērza šūpulītē (In The White Birch Cradle) and Dievs, mīļais tētiņ (God Almighty Father) composed by J. Vītols;  Ave Maria by R. Dubra; Spēles dziesmiņa bērniņam (A Play Song For A Baby) by V. Zilveris;  a piece for orchestra Senās Rīgas dejas (The Ancient Riga Dances) by A. Riekstiņš, and the final sounds of the concert were those of the so called Vītolēni classics – Pūt, vējiņi (Blow the Wind) by J. Lūsēns and Tikai tā (This is it) by U. Marhilevičs.

Thanks to the united and creative team with its leader Ilze Dāve, there was a pleasant atmosphere during the entire term of the camp – everybody worked together in a harmonious manner. Experienced teachers were working together with students of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music and forming an excellent tandem. Many thanks to all pedagogues who chose to spend their holidays together with the young musicians teaching them the love of music and encouraging them to express themselves creatively! Kristīne Circene with the new and promising pedagogues Lāsma Šteinberga, Laine Liepiņa and Dace Melvere were skillfully leading the Vītolēni choir. It was composer Andris Riekstiņš with his positive humor who managed the orchestra members in an engaging manner with a helping hand from Baiba Tauriņa, Artūrs Kuzmins, Aleksandrs Maslovs, Helga Lukševica, Diāna Anna Zaharova, Velga Polinska, Ēriks Miezis, Maija Kļaviņa, Romāns Faļkenšteins and Miķelis Dzenuška. A pleasant innovation at the camp was piano master classes, led by Ilze Mazkalne – an excellent pianist and pedagogue.

What would be the Vītolēni camp without the volunteers! They did not spare efforts to take care of leisure-time activities for children, enthusiastically participated at various creative workshops as well as cared for and looked after children on their day-to-day pursuits. Several foreign princesses and a pirate were visiting the camp to cheer up the youngest children who were in the camp for the first time and sometimes got a little sad being away from home; later a strange participant of the Vītolēni camp (he is said to have gotten lost 13 years ago) finally found his way back to the camp, and we saw some other fairy tale characters, too, who all have become a very important part of the Vītolēni camp.

The sonorous voices of children were complemented by those of singers of 30 choirs who had come to Gaujiena from different parts of Latvia to celebrate the birthday of Jāzeps Vītols and sing together with other choirs; some of these singers had travelled more than three hundred kilometers to be here on July 25! Choirs started to arrive at an early morning and were greeted on the border of the village by the local folk-maids who invited the singers to warm up their voices there and then. Gaujiena was filled with sounds of various songs the entire day as choirs were actively preparing for the evening concert under the supervision of Mārtiņš Klišāns, Chief Conductor of the celebration.

To refresh the traditional scenario, the choirs who had come from the farthest part of Latvia were the first ones to go in the procession, and this was the first year when the mixed choir of Vaiņode region visited us. The classical choir songs of J. Vītols as well as various folksong arrangements and songs written by other important Latvian composers were performed in the concert in various choir compositions. Vītolēni choir and orchestra performed a part of the repertoire they had prepared within the previous week; furthermore, this was the first time in the history of J. Vītols Music Days when the final songs of the concert were accompanied by the Vītolēni orchestra. The end of the concert was marked by such compositions as Beverīnas dziedonis (The Bard of Beverīna) composed by J. Vītols, Te, kur avots (Here where the source is) composed and conducted by Edgars Račevskis who was the Honorary Chief Conductor of the celebration, and Gaismas pils (The Castle of Light) by J. Vītols, filling the open-air stage of Anniņas and the entire Gaujiena with positive emotions.

In the framework of the celebration, the Gaujiena Jāzeps Vītols Foundation in collaboration with the National Culture Centre of Latvia offered master classes for conductors under the guidance of such excellent personalities as Inese Romancāne and Arturas Burke who led classes on vocal aparatus training and vocal hygiene, and Mārtiņš Klišāns prepared the repertoire for the conductors’ choir.

The baseline of this year’s J. Vītols Music Days was that of Latvian signs and symbols, underpinning the final concerts of both the Vītolēni camp and the Music Day and embellishing the entire valley of the Anniņas open-air stage in the form of stylized decorations. We reminded the symbolism of Latvian signs to the audience of both concerts and sang folksongs, solved riddles, played some jokes and recited Latvian dainas. When people of different generations sing and play together, the youngest generation inherits our culture and learns from the predecessors.

Participants of the Vītolēni camp express their sincere thanks to all of the sponsors and supporters – the State Culture Capital Foundation, Vidzeme Planning Region, Administration of Gaujiena municipality, Council of the Ape region, A/S Vidzemes papīrs, A/S Laima, SIA Lienama, SIA Intrad, Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, Latvian Table Hockey Federation, and Baiba Zvaigznīte from the Regional Television.

Following eight days spent together and several concerts, vītolēni parted ways with tears in their eyes, looking forward to the next get-together on September 5 in Smiltene after which they would start counting days until the next camp in Gaujiena – a place where the spirit of J. Vītols music and Latvian passion for singing welcomes everyone.
